The shack at Amateur Radio Station N0UN.
How about this? My Father bought the estate of W8OPM after he became a silent key back in the mid 70′s. He figured the “new” radios might keep me out of trouble through my teenage years (he was wrong). I operated Mike’s old Hallicrafters HT-44, SX-117 and HT-45 Loudenboomer amp for years before everything had to go when my mother wanted to sell her house. I didn’t have a place to put the basement full of radio equipment at the time (early 90′s) so it all had to go, and it had to go fast.
Fast forward to 2010. Can you believe the Ham I sold the rack mounted power supply and Hallicrafters HT-45 Loudenboomer to in the early 90′s sold it back to me? Ed (KB8CQ) followed me home from a Parma Radio Club meeting on that dreaded day when I knew it all had to go, and he purchased the rack power supply and Hallicrafters HT-45 for $100 that night. I asked him for $75, he gave me $100. The next day a local Ham Radio Liquidator removed the the racks and radios for no payment to my Mother (but he didn’t charge her either). They disassembled a 7′ tall, 3 panel wide military rack full of equipment and loaded boxes upon boxes of radios – filling a trailer full of my old stuff. Mom then sold the house a few months later and none of the equipment has ever resurfaced that I’ve ever seen, except for the single rack power supply and HT-45 Loudenboomer that Ed bought.
Here’s how Karma works. I happened to talk to an old mutual friend of ours recently (Bill, N8WS) and I asked if Ed still had the amp and power supply, and if he did - how much would he want for it. Bill contacted Ed and to my surprised Ed was willing to part with it, and part with it for what he paid for it back then, $100.
I had to pick myself off the floor.
I jumped on a plane to Cleveland, met with Ed and like he did for me decades ago, I did for him. He asked $100 for everything, I gave him $200.
My friend here in Colorado (Keith, K0KE) was coming straight through Cleveland on his way back from his summer lake home in New York the next day with his pick-up truck, so we loaded up the gear and Keith drove it home to Denver.
The icing on the cake? Check the videos. Everything works perfectly! In fact, from what I remember (my mind may have been full of smoke back then), I think it works better than it did in 1974! Thank-you Bill! Thank-you Ed! Thank-you Keith!
A kilowatt OUTPUT from a single 40+ year old 3-400Z? Good stuff.

Hi Wayne……just a correction….your signal was 9/5 ,and note.. i was using a ts50 ( 100w)
on a “long wire” ( about 15m) with a 4:1 balun,all home made ,2.5mts above ground.
A 7800km contact on these conditions …well, not that bad ( for me)

Hey:
Is the HT 45 really putting out 1000 watts peak out? I had one years ago and as far as I remember it had an pep INPUT of around 1000 watts. Build like a battleship. Eimac air socket, big transformer and oil hi-voltage condenser. 73s de Hans SM5KI
Hello Hans, yes it does do 1 KW OUTPUT from the original 3-400Z (surely not for long).
As you see in the videos, that’s not the original power supply. I had 3,600V on the plate in the video. I almost never run it that hot though, usually keep it around 3K for 750 to 800 watts.
73 & good DX
