3Y0K 10 Meters CW

N0UN working 3Y0K 10 Meters CW3Y0K 10 Meters CW. Well that was a surprise! For the past week or so the CW & SSB 10 Meter openings to Bouvet Island were pretty weak starting around 1500Z, eventually fading out to nothing in an hour or so. Today’s opening started way late around 1615Z (10:15 AM local in Denver). Until today Club Log showed there were a total of 12 Colorado Q’s on 10 Meters. Judging by how weak their signal had been on 10 I suspect most (if not all) of those Q’s were that lazy, computer scripted text messaging FT8 app thingy.

That is until today.

Luckily I had all my gear ready if 3Y0K were to pop up on 10 CW or SSB even if it was outside where I thought their workable window was. I wasn’t disappointed! Here’s the 8 element GXP antenna doing its thing short path to Bouvet!

I did notice today 3Y0K took some clever mitigation effort to counter the seemingly non-stop DQRM. They moved their transmit frequency at least 3 times that I witnessed. Smart move as they (for the most part) stayed ahead of the QRMers. When I didn’t hear them for a couple, 3 overs I went snooping around and sure enough, there they were!

If you listened to the recording now we have to work on W1BR and his horrible key clicks. I’m not exactly sure why he set up only 200 Hz above 3Y0K, but I’m glad I bagged 3Y0K BEFORE that Dog & Pony show started.

See you in the “Human Mode” pileups!

yea….i was expecting “the usual” propagation on 10 too. So I tried working them while they were kind of light….early….but couldn’t break thru the “European Wall”. Then, to my surprise….right around the time you mentioned….they surprisedly starting building. I got excited….until after 5 minutes…..THEY STOPPED. Damn………..

So I went to lunch (we’re an hour ahead of you). When I got back…digging thru old spots….I saw where they had apparently ran out of gas….stopped to refuel the gens…..and CAME BACK ON. And pretty much worked NA only. And those spots I saw said they had GREAT sigs on 10m for quite a while….all while I was in town (I live out in the country on a Horse Ranch) eating lunch. Shame on me……………..I missed it. What I didn’t miss, was that idiot over and over and over sending TU on the TX freq. Several times I saw the pileup “surge” again when the DQRMer sent TU. In a perfect world, people like that would be shot between the eyes…..and eliminated from the gene pool. Yea, tell us how ya’ really feel….Tim…..

Now I see the post from Charles they’re packing up almost everything this weekend. So probably if I don’t nab em’ on 10 Thursday or Friday morning, I may very likely not get em’ on that band. My counts not as impressive as yours. Here’s what I have:

    80 cw
    40 cw
    40 SSB
    20 cw
    17 cw
    12 cw
    12 SSB

And sadly, I have a few dupes on some of those….due to all the DQRM you mentioned. If I wasn’t 99.99% sure I got em’…yes…shame on me, I worked them again to MAKE sure. No, still haven’t done the recording thing here……….

Hey, If I don’t work em’ again the rest of this trip, I’ll take what I got. It’s an ATNO for me. But i would like to get em’ on 10,15 and 30 cw if possible. I figure after this weekend, it’ll be back to almost all FT8. Hey, it’s already OVER 50% FT8….sadly. So much for concentrating on “Human Modes”.

And as you know, I’ve heard you a couple of times in the pileups!
