It struck me today while hunting XX9W and S21WD – DXing today is a faint ghost of what it used to be. Other than the recent 3Y0K Bouvet DXpedition and a few (very few) other outliers, most TXTpeditions these days are playing the lazy, automated mindless computer scripted text messaging software app FT8 and have practically given up on communicating via Human Modes.
FT8 has become Ham Radio’s “Participation Trophy” for wanna’ be Amateur Radio Operators. You no longer have to compete or communicate, you just participate (or shall I say your computer participates?). YOU can be out mowing the grass, eating breakfast, sleeping, hell anything but actually communicating & participating. You don’t need big antennas, amplifiers or even a speaker. Same for the TXTpeditions. You can have 14 laptops texting while you’re drinking Mai Tai’s on the beach in the Pacific. Your automated computer software hums along in the queue until their computer software handshakes and Voilà! You get the DXCC credit and the TXTpedition and ARRL gets your money. So much fun!
Here’s a couple snapshots of the Livestreams from my hunt for S21WD and XX9W a few minutes ago:
This is today’s version of Ham Radio DXing I call “TXTing”. It is what it is.
The last few years I’ve seen several posts around the Internet from old school Hams selling off their equipment and giving up the hobby. Can’t say I blame them. But for me I found I’d rather work every DXpedition I can on CW and Phone, even if I’ve done it a hundred times before. I take pleasure in working DXpeditions that put forth some effort in Human Modes PLUS every time I work them I figure I’m knocking some little pistol out of the log. It’s a win-win situation!
Kinda’ like working Bouvet on 8 bands. I didn’t need Bouvet for an All Time New One, but I figured with 12 Human Mode Q’s, that’s 12 others that didn’t make the log. I figure the odds are it’s the same 12 that first tried getting their automated computer txt with Bouvet on FT8. You know the type – they cried 3Y0K didn’t run a Livestream, they cried hoping their computer didn’t work a pirate, they cried they can’t compete, they cried big guns need to step aside and let the little pistols have a chance, blah, blah, blah…
And for all you butt hurt FT8ers right about now, go post on YOUR Blog how FT8 is saving the world, don’t do it on my Blog. Trust me, you have ZERO chance of being heard ’round here. Being “heard” isn’t part of your TXTing skillset anyway – “no speaker required” RR 73?
See you in the those rare places where you actually have to earn your Ham Radio stripes – those dinosaur CW and Phone Human Mode pileups!

5 hours later, now sunrise at XX9W and where are they?
The good news?
In the interim S21WD showed up briefly on 20 Meters Phone:
Don’t need it, but I’ll take it.

I SEE BIG CHEATING ON T31TTT. ONLY ONE PEOPLES GET QSO ON 80 AND 160 EVERY MODE EVEN THE SSTV PSK RTTY CW SSB DATA FT8 FT4 FT4 DATA ALL MODES. LOOK AT CLUBLOG STATS 37% DUPES WARNING CLUBLOG OVER 96% DIGITALS. ANOTHER REBEL CON JOB. 3D2USU DOM FLIMFLAM SWINDLER SCAMMER
Excellent points, sir. I’m just a SSB operator and working 3Y0K was my number 336 on SSB. I’m saddened by what’s become of DXing now. To many whiny people getting upset because their computer can’t hear the DText. To me, there’s no better thrill than working a pileup while hearing the DX station’s signal get stronger and then, boom, they come back to you. I still “fist pump” when I work a DX station.
I don’t see the challenge of FT8. If someone can explain to me the challenge of operating FT8 without calling me an old fart for not embracing new technology, I’m all ears.
Exactly. A friend of mine asked….what if it was an ATNO….and all they were working was FT8 and you had to work FT8 for that new one. I told him…..nope. ..not going to happen. In my mind, it wouldn’t count as a radio contact anyway. It’s AI….2 computers talking…..not REAL ham radio. So in my mind, it’s not a contact.
Yea. ..I’ve just aboug given up on S21WD and XX9W. I think they’re out clubbing or hitting the beach. They’re not working any radio…..just FT8. I only got Bouvet on 8 band slots…. but OF COURSE…..it was all cw and ssb….REAL RADIO!
Congrats on the Bouvet action — this puny station never heard a peep from them on phone — oh well — at least I have North Korea on SSB!
The only thing we can do is get on the air and call cq on human modes. Regarding FT8… they say, “if you can’t beat Em, join em”, well, I’m not joining them. It might mean missing a new one, but at least I got my dxcc before they cheapened the award and made it easy with ft8. We need don miller back. 2 man dxpedititions going all over the place on $100 a day getting it done on cw/ssb only.
AJ, I wholeheartedly agree, I do it all the time! CQ DX!
