SV2/SV1RP/A Mt. Athos On The Air

SV2/SV1RP/AWhen I saw the DX Cluster spot for SV2/SV1RP/A on 20 Meter CW something about that call caught my attention.  Then I remembered.  Mount Athos!

Anybody know if George (SV2/SV1RP/A) has been DXCC approved?  George was there on Mount Athos a few years ago too.  From this article on DX Coffee it appears George trained Monk Lakovos (SV2RSG/A) who earned his ticket in 2015.

I believe George and Monk Lakovos operated from the Koutloumousiou Holy Monastery, and Elder Apollo (SV2ASP/A) operates from the Dochiariou Holy Monastery.  If I remember what Zorro (JH1AJT) told me a few years ago when he was on Mount Athos, there’s something like 20 or 21 Monasteries on Mount Athos.

As you can hear in the recording below, my hand was shaking so much from all the excitement, I barely gave George his report and number, lol.

My QSO with SV2RSG has been rejected by the DXCC desk due to “No documentation received”.

    My name is George.
My amateur radio call sign is: SV1RP
I live a quiet life without nightmares and I have never been hospitalized in a psychiatric clinic.
I usually do not fly in the clouds.
Surprisingly, however, I have read recently on many international amateur pages that at the last WPX contest, where I participated, I was on Mount Athos !!! And I transmit from there !!!
I also found that being on Mount Athos was not only mentioned by one person, but more than that, I was even tough criticized for this.

What I want to clarify is this:
In the last WPX contest, I also took part with the SV2/SV1RP/A call, and I transmit from my alternative shack, which is located in the north. Greece and specifically in Giannitsa City.
So my international scorn was deliberately done by people who acted fraudulently to expose me internationally.
All the necessary legal procedures have already begun, so that those responsible for this deceptive act can apologize to the Greek authorities but also for the complete restoration of the truth.

    >From now on, be more careful with the “information” you publish, especially when it comes from low-intelligence people and who are moving to the limits of legality.
In any case, however, I am cautious about my next actions.
    Thank you.

    73, SV1RP, George

And so it goes. A letter from George saying he signed SV2/SV1RP/A in the WPX Contest, but was not on Mount Athos (this time), but operated from the city of Giannitsa in Northern Greece.

And here’s my million dollar questions:

      Why sign /A?
      – Why have your QRZ page SV2/SV1RP/A (and /T) as operating from Mount Athos with pictures, QSL cards, even so far as to training other Monks such as SV2RSP/A?
      – Why did other Greek Hams vouch for this operation, even stating in phone conversations with George that he was on Mount Athos?

This whole Mount Athos thing over the decades is hard to keep track of. Hams vouching for his location, license, permits, etc. now for George to say he wasn’t even there (this time)?

I’m not so sure George himself even wrote that email. Now wouldn’t that be something?

      • Paul says

Yeah, Wayne, I don’t know. When I met with Greek hams, they told me that /A means they are operating from an Alternative location. It does not denote Mt. Athos. Monk Apollo is licensed in SV2 Thesaloniki and when he operates from somewhere else such as Mt. Athos he is correctly using /A.

        • N0UN says

Well, that would make sense but I hear a lot of Greek stations operating portable without the /A. Some sign /P – even a few portable on islands recently. Up until this WPX contest, I’ve never heard a Greek station sign /A except for Elder Apollo on Mount Athos.

Could it be that he purposely signed with SV2/SV1RP/A to attract big pileup for a higher score in the WPX test? I could care less what his motives were if it wasn’t for the fact that he blames and criticizes others for posting false info when in fact he should be the one to blame for not being specific enough about his WPX 2017 test QTH and ultimately avoid all this.

    • N0UN says

I found this on SV2BBO QRZ page:

      SV2BBO/A

Lisenced Alternative location KN10ve, Camping Rea Vourvourou Chalkidiki.

/A not necessarily Mount ATHOS !! It is alternative location in the same geographical area under Greek Law, Υ.Α.38200/1136 since Septemper 2, 2011.

  3. SV1BDO Sotiris says

According to current Greek Ham radio law (article 12.2.1), a Greek ham (in this case SV1RP) that operates from an alternative QTH in a different call area must sign SV2/SV1RP. He must use the /A suffix only if he operates from Alternative QTH that belongs in the same call area of his call. So, signing as SV2/SV1RP/A does not follow the Greek ham radio laws. The same improper signing also aplies for his Mt. Athos operation. The only correct signing according to Greek Ham Law is the SV2/SV1RP/T.

SV2ASP/A signs so, as in his Greek Ham licence has declared that his permanent QTH is located somewhere in Northern Greece (in SV2 call area) and Mt. Athos monastery is his Alternative QTH, so for this reason he signs /A. On the other hand, SV2RSG signed so, as he has declared as permanent QTH Mt. Athos. Hope that this cleared the confusion.

Please consider that there are 2 total different meanings: Correct signing & Legal operation. In some cases (like Mt. Athos) a correct signing does not means that the operation is also legal.

During the WPX CW contest, the DX cluster was full of spots with SV2/SV1RP/A call, allmost all spots saying that he was in Mt. Athos. Does anybody that worked him in this specific contest received any live comment from him regarding his QTH? I guess NO, so everybody thought that they are working Mt. Athos, and probably they would sent later a SASE with 3-5 USD to receive his Mt. Athos QSL card, that still is not recognized by DXCC. If George made 1000 QSOs, the possible total earned cash should be in the range of 2000-5000 USD, not an insignificant ammount for just a weekend…

George wrote a letter to DXNews, 5 days after the contest regarding this. He is focusing mainy on me while saying: “So my international scorn was deliberately done by people who acted fraudulently to expose me internationally. All the necessary legal procedures have already begun, so that those responsible for this deceptive act can apologize to the Greek authorities but also for the complete restoration of the truth. From now on, be more careful with the “information” you publish, especially when it comes from low-intelligence people and who are moving to the limits of legality.
