Sunrise on Bouvet was 0612 their local time this morning (0512Z). It took some work getting through the idiot tuners and frequency police but I bagged them 4 minutes after their sunrise. They were just a whisper here in the hours before their sunrise.
I started another recording 30 minutes after their sunrise (0540Z) and 3Y0K is much, MUCH stronger. IF I knew they would get this loud I would’ve waited to call.
3Y0K 0540Z (30 minutes after their sunrise)
Right now it’s 50 minutes after their sunrise and 3Y0K is starting to drop here in Denver, Colorado. They’re still workable, but their signal is steadily dropping. Peak signal was around 35-40 minutes after their sunrise. I just heard Larry, K0RS maybe 60-70 air miles Southwest of me work them at 0559Z.
People upset they aren’t running an Internet Livestream should take note about recording their Q’s. Sometimes after hours of calling and calling – the Q happens so fast you thought you were dreaming. You can always go back and listen to the MP3 recording and get that warm fuzzy feeling you’re in the log (or not). A recording isn’t as good as seeing your call on the board, but it’ll do. I think back to the days before the Internet and ponder the question, “how did we survive without Livestream?” lol.
Anyway, maybe somebody somewhere may find those bits of information useful in their hunt for 3Y0K.
Good luck, see you in more of the “human mode” pileups!
UPDATE 0615Z – 3/March/2026
Exactly like yesterday, but I waited a few “extra” minutes after their sunrise to start calling and I bagged them on SSB at 0528Z. Also the same as yesterday – not workable before their sunrise, but started building in the minutes after, peaking around 0545Z here in Denver. And also like yesterday idiots, tuners and frequency cops damn near ruin it for everybody but you just have to “try” and keep a level head and work through their bullshit.
That’s now 338 DXCC on Phone and 338 Mixed for me.
I do have to say the Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) on the FTDX101MP, even at it’s lowest setting of “1”, allows SSB to pop into the clear. After I recorded my Q I let the recorder run for another 20 minutes or so. You can hear their signal build.
Heads Up! If you don’t have an X.com account, you may wish to open a free account just to see Chun Wang’s daily videos and pictures on this DXpedition. They are absolutely memorizing. You’ll have an entirely different view of what these guys have, and are going through – for us to work them.

Day 7 at sea:
Today is our arrival day. We officially entered Norwegian territorial waters at 06:35 (UTC+1) and spotted Bouvet Island for the first time around 9 am.
Our ship is currently holding position about one nautical mile northeast of Bouvet Island. According to the… https://t.co/XuL5Q1w07j pic.twitter.com/dIzGbHg6o3

Lumpy, No, I haven’t even listened for them on phone and don’t care as I have 3Y5X on 20m phone clear back in 1990. I feel the same way about phone as you do about FT8. I’d probably take a phone QSO on 15m as I’ve been shut out on 15 and it is only band I still need Bouvet on. Unfortunately I’ve been away from the house too much with errands, but I’ll be home tomorrow. Hope for better prop. I heard W0LSD in Buena Vista work him on 15, so I know it’s possible. Got him on 80 last nite. 73. K0RS
Larry, Bouvet on 15 Meters has been a tough haul from Colorado. Really tough.
I worked them at 1407Z – maybe that time info may help you as they wind down.

Yea, I kept trying to work them in the first few hours they were on 40….like from 0000 to 0300. The DQRMers were HORRENDOUS here. And 3Y0K was very weak. I might have actually worked them twice, once ….or NONE….during that time. Every time I thought they were coming back to me, MULTIPLE strong tuners, “UP”, cq calls, etc occurred. I couldn’t hear squat. I like your idea about the recording. I might have to start doing that. Then I go go back and MAYBE see if I could make out my call thru all the jammers? Or not…but it would be worth a try.
But like you….I just kept listening to them…..yea….for over 5 hours. And I kept hoping around their sunrise…they’d come up…and sure enough…shortly after 0500….they began to come up. I worked them….FOR SURE….at 0514. By then, there were much fewer jammers (I think their moms come down to the basement and tell them it’s time to go to bed? You know, they must be Losers living at home with mommie and have nothing better to do than DQRM?)…and they were up to a legitimate S5 here in Bama. So it was MUCH easier. And they continued to build after I worked them………..
Now I can concentrate on working them on some other bands. Bouvet is an ATNO for me….number 330.

Congratulations Tim! One more for Honor Roll!
I heard you calling in the 40M SSB pileup. Man, you are strong! Not sure if you got them or not? I added the Phone recording to the post. I got luck nobody was calling or QRMing his transmit frequency tonight when he came back to me!

Yes, my log shows 0600…close enuf. I turned the radio off ~0100z cuz of the DQRM. I needed 40m, but not an ATNO, so no reason to put up with it. I went back around 0545 and not only were they much louder but vy little DQRM. WTG Lumpy!
Larry, I was able to bag them on 40M Phone at 0528Z. I added the recording to the bottom of the post. Were you able to get them on Phone tonight?
